2009

  • Joined Latino Cultural Awareness Committee (LCAC)

  • Joined Asian Cultural Awareness Committee (ACAC)

  • Elected Vice Chairman of the Norfolk Music and Performing Arts Committee (NMPAC)

    • Responsible for the day-to-day operations of the program, as well as scheduling and organizing music concerts in the prison auditorium.

  • Elected AACC Function Coordinator

    • Responsible for scheduling and organizing events for Kwanzaa, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and Black History Month. Wayland also proposed, and successfully got Juneteenth established as an AACC celebration.

  • Accepted into Boston University

2010

  • Elected Chairman of the Norfolk Music and Performing Arts Committee (NMPAC)

  • Elected as an official board member of the Norfolk Lifers' Group

  • Elected on the Store & Finance Committee

2011

  • Elected by camp-wide vote as Minority Co-Camp Chairman of the Norfolk Resident Council from 2011-2012 (Resident Council elections are for a 1 year term. Can run for reelection.)

2012

  • Elected Chairman of the Norfolk Food Committee

2013-2016

  • Completed semester coursework through Boston University

  • Taught Music Theory through Norfolk Music and Performing Arts Committee (NMPAC)

2017

  • Won 2nd election for Minority Co-Camp Chairman in 2017

  • Exposed Norfolk's toxic drinking water to the public in 2017

  • Organized with advocates in free society to provide clean drinking water to incarcerated people at Norfolk from 2017-2018

2018

2019

  • Created proposal to establish an AACC at Gardner

2020

  • Drafted a list of demands to Governor in order to advocate for accommodations for incarcerated people during COVID-19

  • Organized with #DeeperThanWater to provide healthy food for incarcerated people at the start of COVID-19.

    • Incarcerated people were protesting prison food at this time. The food was made by case workers and prison staff, while kitchen staff was not allowed into the prison.

    • May 4th: Wayland began providing food to everyone in the unit for three days, after prison guards attempted to serve food that had fallen on the ground.

    • May 5th-June 3rd: Wayland was put into solitary confinement, in retaliation for feeding folks inside.

    • June 3rd: The staff entered Wayland’s solitary cell and sprayed him with chemicals. They then forced him to move to Old Colony Correctional Center, where positive covid cases were present. (There were no covid cases at Gardner, at that time.) This was at a time where lateral moves between facilities were forbidden.

2022

  • Completed Programming: Fiction and Storytelling, Financial Literacy, Mexican Cooking Course, Scientific Thinking and Communication

2023

  • Organized a mail campaign, protesting unstable and unsafe housing practice, advocating for lifers housing rights

  • Completed Programming: Black History-Black Freedom-Black Love Course, Gardening Course

2024

  • Arrived at MCI-Norfolk

  • Completed Programs: Building Effective Teams, Criminal Thinking Program, Dealing With Conflict, Technical Writing, Violence Reduction Program

  • Career Programming: Clean Energy, Communicating With Others, Electrical Connectors, Electrical Resistance Test Equipment

  • Elected pro tempore Secretary of the Norfolk Resident Council

  • Drafted proposal to establish an Empowering Art Self-Improvement group at Norfolk in 2024 (group proposal was approved).

2025

  • Completed 8 week American Sign Language (ASL) course

    • Began tutoring ASL course

  • Completed Programming: Healthy Habits and Wellbeing

  • Career Programming: Clean Energy, Construction, Electrical, Plumbing, Solar

  • May 8th - Received Parole Hearing under the Mattis Decision

  • October 14th - Denied by the Parole Board

2026
